Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born in Madrid
to Eduardo Cruz, a retailer, and Encarna Sanchez who was a hairdresser. When
she was a child, she was already a compulsive performer, performing TV
commercials for her family's amusement, but she decided to devote her energy to
dance. After nine years of classical ballet instruction at Spain's National
Conservatory she was able to continue her dance training under the supervision
of a variety of prominent dancers. She discovered her true calling at age 15,
when she defeated more than 300 girls at an audition for a talent agency. The
agency offered her roles on Spanish television and music videos. This led to
many more roles, which opened the doors to a successful career on the world of
big screens. Cruz made her film debut with The Greek Labyrinth (1993). (The

by Timothy Dalton. The third film she starred in was the Oscar-winning Belle
Epoque (1992), in which she played one of four sisters who compete for the love
of a beautiful army deserter. The film also garnered several Goyas that are the
Spanish equivalent of the Academy Awards. Cruz became a renowned Spanish
actress with her three- to four films per year increasing resume. Live Flesh (1997)
(Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director
Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her ticket to international fame), and the
same year she was the lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film
Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none
for Cruz). Her luck turned around in 1998 when her movie-industry comedy La
Nina De Tus Ojos (1998) won her the award for the Best Actress Goya. Cruz has
made a few other appearances in English-language films but her first big
international success was Almodovar's All About My Mother (1999), in which she
played an unassuming but well-meaning nun. Cruz found herself extremely
sought-after across both sides of the Atlantic as her film received many awards
and praises. The next major film she worked on was Woman on Top (2000) which is
an American comedy about a chef with a captivating culinary skill and a severe
