Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love the arts from her grandmother Denise. The aunt was on in the evening shift as a nurse, so she could follow her passion of theater and literature throughout the day. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay learnt by doing that art can be a powerful tool to engage in activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother, with a conscience for social issues, and pushed DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family was for many generations. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the historic civil right's march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summers and was later motivated to make a documentary on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled in the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay discovered a passion for the field of broadcast journalism while a student. DuVernay began her career as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the task of watching the home and looking through the waste of one of members of the jury. As a result of her duties she was dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in small production studios right out of school. In 1999, she founded her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Besides PR, the agency established several lifestyle platforms like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
